Wales is renowned for its eisteddfodic tradition, which gives young singers and performers an early opportunity to develop their talents. This without doubt is one reason why Wales punches above its weight in the singing world. Lucy Kelly is the latest young star to emerge from this tradition, having hit the headlines with her notable hat-trick at the 2008 Cardiff National Eisteddfod.

Her eisteddfodic successes led to frequent concerts, and it soon became apparent that Lucy not only had a brilliant voice, but a natural stage presence and engaging personality to go with it. Her first album – ‘The Voice from Paradise’ (the title refers to the Welsh name of her home village “Paradwys”) – followed, and a string of appearances at famous venues and events: Voice for Wales, the Ryder Cup, The Albert Hall, Cruise Ship concerts, and she shared the concert stage with a host of established singers including Rhys Meirion, Elin Fflur, Dafydd Iwan, Gwawr Edwards, the Three Tenors, Trebor Edwards, Shân Cothi and Aled Wyn Davies.

This, her second album, is proof of her growing maturity as a singer: her innate musicality and natural serenity remains, but is now allied to a confidence that comes with experience. The result is an album of remarkable quality and mature assurance from a singer who is still only 13 years old, and the success story of Lucy Kelly is certain to continue.

And one important reason for this is that Lucy, thanks to the guiding hand of her parents, and despite achieving success and media attention at such a young age, remains a young woman with both feet firmly on the ground. And the road to Paradise is still home.

Lucy comes from a beautiful part of Anglesey called Paradwys – the Welsh word for Paradise! The description “voice from Paradise” is therefore not a meaningless phrase conjured up by a PR agency, but a statement of fact which anyone listening to this recording will appreciate has a deeper significance.

This, her first album, is released in 2009 when Lucy is just eleven years old, and on her first year at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni. From a very early age, she has derived much pleasure from singing and performing, and she first appeared on the stage of The National Urdd Eisteddfod when only six years old. That was the start of a very successful eisteddfodic career which has seen her winning many first prizes on the national level, and this has led to a busy concert schedule as well.

She has appeared on several TV programmes, and is a member of the acclaimed Ysgol Glanaethwy Youth Choir. She travels a hundred miles round trip to Prion, near Denbigh, every week for voice and singing tuition by the well-known folk singer Leah Owen. Her love of music encompasses many genres : folk songs, classical solos and the traditional Welsh form of singing to harp accompaniment, Cerdd Dant. While recording this album, she was also preparing with Leah her repertoire for her first appearance on the stage of London’s Albert Hall at the Male Choir Festival, one of the youngest ever to perform as a soloist in that prestigious venue.

Her mature voice and excellent technique, combined with a bubbly personality and endearing character, will ensure that Lucy Kelly is a name we will hear a lot about in the future, and we know that this her debut album will be very well received by all lovers of fine singing.
